County seat is Hagerstown. The county was named after George Washington. Principal towns are Hagerstown, Boonsboro, Hancock, and Williamsport. More than 100 miles of Potomac River shoreline are in Washington County. In addition to the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, which protects the riverside from development, Washington County has a number of state and county parks and other recreational facilities near the Potomac. The county is bounded by the Pennsylvania state line to the north, Frederick County to the east, the Potomac to the south, and Allegany County (Sideling Hill Creek) to the west.
