The upper part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway includes several dramatic overlooks of the Potomac above Key Bridge. The parkway begins at river level near Roosevelt Island, then rises slowly and follows the bluffs along the river. A connecting exit follows Spout Run into Arlington County. The parkway also provides access to McLean, Turkey Run Park, Fort Marcy, and the Claude Moore Colonial Farm. For visitors approaching the city, the parkway provides the most dramatic view of Washington. Overlooks are available from the northbound lanes only. Spout Run, a tributary that rises in Arlington County, is one of several streams that course down the rocky palisades to join the Potomac. The Potomac Heritage Trail follows the river bank along the Parkway from Roosevelt Island to Great Falls.
