Chicamuxen Wildlife Management Area

Maryland State Wildlife Area

A small tributary of the Potomac, Chicamuxen Creek has prime marshlands and forests preserved in a 381-acre site. The site is noted for a wide variety of waterfoowl and bald eagles, which can be seen hunting the marshes and upland areas. Upland areas have a wide variety of forest-dwelling birds. The area is popular for hunters, bird watchers, and hikers. Several trails traverse the property.

The area is adjacent to the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center, Stump Neck Annex, at the point where Mattawoman Creek meets the Potomac. In the Civil War, it was the site of an encampment led by Union General Joseph Hooker.
