Lady Bird Johnson Park and LBJ Memorial Grove

On the Virginia side of the Potomac (although technically on land owned by the National Park Service in the District of Columbia), are two parks dedicated to former President Lyndon B. Johnson and his wife, Lady Bird.
More than 2,700 dogwood trees are planted in the Lady Bird Johnson Park; in the spring, a million daffodils bloom. At the south end of the park, 15 acres are set aside for a simple monument to the late President. The large monolith of pink Texas granite, shown in the photo, is the focal point for the monument.
The parks are actually on a man-made island that was known as Columbia Island until 1968. The island is only a few hundred feet wide, separated from Virginia by Boundary Channel. Thousands of commuters and travelers arriving at National Airport pass through the island on the heavily traveled section of the George Washington Memorial Parkway. The parks are accessible only from the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Parking is available on both sides of the parkway. Restrooms and the adjacent Columbia Island Marina are open 7a.m.-10p.m.
