Alexandria Lights Up the Potomac--The 22nd annual Alexandria Parade of Lights was held on the river in early December, featuring more than 50 boats. The event is producted by Visit Alexandria, City Cruises, and the Old Dominion Boat Club and sponsored by Amazon. This year's event was part of a weekend of activities in Alexandria, including the Scottish Christmas Walk. DetailsNew Potomac River Bridge--After several years of construction, the new Nice-Middleton Bridge, carrying U.S. 301 over the lower Potomac, opened in late October. The new bridge replaced the Governor Harry Nice Memorial Bridge, doubling the capacity of the river crossing. The replacement bridge, estimated to cost $850 million, features four lanes and stretches 1.7 miles between Virginia and Maryland. More information.
Steam Trains in Western Maryland--The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad is running a full schedule this winter featuring its restored steam engine, the Baldwin engine number 1309. The steam engine is pulling the Polar Express between Cumberland and Frostburg, Maryland, throughout December. The engine went into service over the past year, following a multi-million-dollar restoration. Details
