Potomac River Tunnel Project Gets Rolling--This past summer, the Potomac River tunnel project started identifying underground utilities along Independence Ave. SW in Washington, DC. Much of the work will be around West Potomac Park, but there will also be seven other sites locations for the project, which won't be completed until 2030. The goal is to eliminate combined sewer overflows along the Potomac shoreline in the area from Georgetown to the Anacostia River. DetailsColumbia University Student Dies after Kayaking Accident--A student visiting DC from an Irish college was killed in a kayaking accident after being trapped under a rock near Little Falls. The student was enrolled in Trinity College in Dublin and hosted by the Columbia University whitewater kayaking club. Details: Details
Drought Continues--A very hot August continued the dry conditions in the Potomac and Shenandoah River watersheds, with the western parts of the Washington are in "moderate drought". Rainfall in mid-September did little to alleviate the drought conditions, particularly in the Shenandoah Valley. The dry conditions in the early summer months may contribute to a less-than-spectacular fall leaf season. Details
St. Mary's County Riverfest--The 17th Annual RiverFest is returning to Historic St. Mary’s City on Saturday, September 28, 2024. The festival is free and open to the public, and will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The RiverFest celebration begins with a ceremonial river wade in honor of Bernie Fowler at 2 p.m., and will include a tour of the Maryland Dove and the Pride of Baltimore II. Those who attend can also learn about the life of a waterman with oyster mongering demonstrations. Details
Canal Repairs at Edwards Ferry--The National Park Service has replaced a vehicle bridge at Edwards Ferry, part of a project to improve access to the river. Other replacements include Fifteen Mile Creek and Dargan Bend, two popular fishing areas in the upper canal. The work is part of a canal-wide repair and improvement effort. Details
