New Amtrak Bridge--Sections of the new North Portal Bridge, the busy Amtrak bridge over the Hackensack River in New Jersey, was towed down the Hudson in early November. The arched section of the bridge, one of three arches, made the trip down the Hudson from Albany to replace a 114-year old bridge that carries the Amtrak main line to New York. The total cost of the project is $1.6 billion and is expected to be operational in 2026. DetailsManhattan Beachfront--A 5.5-acre space in the Hudson River Park in Manhattan is New York's latest public beachfront. The Gansevoort Peninsula, on the river in lower Manhattan, is designed to be a sunbathing beach (sorry, no swimming!), created with 1200 tons of sand, beach umbrellas, and a water access point for kayakers and non-motorized boats. Recovering Roadways--After a heavy downpour in the mid-Hudson Vally in July 2023, floods wreaked havoc on local roads in Orange, Rockland, and Putnam Counties. One historic road, Route 218 near the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, was severely damaged. In September, the New York State Department of Transportation reopened a section of the highway between West Point and Cornwall. The nearby Bear Mountain Bridge, which turns 100 years old this November, was also affected but is now fully functional. Details
Sleepy Hollow Celebrates 150 Years--This fall, the village of Sleepy Hollow in Westchester County will be continuing its celebration of 150 years. Upcoming events include a Halloween joyride in October and a December stroll through the historic Hudson River town. Details
