Middle Ground Flats is an island in Greene County located nearby to the village Athens and the hamlet Oakdale. It is a unique area that is used for recreational activities such as fishing, hiking, and birdwatching. The area is also known for its scenic beauty and is a popular spot for photography. It is an island in Greene County situated nearby to the village Athens and the hamlet Oakdale. The area is a 296-acre lot and is located along the Hudson River. The Middle Ground Flats was originally a sandbar between Hudson and Athens, but it became more of a shipping hazard as the area became industrialized in the 19th Century. The Army Corps of Engineers used it as a dumping ground for dredge spoils, and the sandbar grew into an island.
