Several giant wind turbines are located on Backbone Mountain near the Fairfax Stone. Backbone Mountain is the highest elevation in the area, more than 4,000 feet above sea level. Several wind energy companies have leased land on the ridges of Backbone Mountain and Meadow Mountains, located in the Potomac-Garrett and Savage river state forests.
