Western Maryland Railway 5th Crossing
River Crossing
This bridge, built in 1905, carried the Western Maryland Railway across the Potomac into West Virginia. The brige is just upstream of the entrance to the Kessler Tunnel, which was cut into deep rock. The area was difficult for both canal and railroad; nearby, the canal undertook construction of the Paw Paw tunnel--a project that took four years and set the project back in the race to Cumberland.
