Shepherd University
West Virginia School
This university is a public, liberal arts institution established in 1871. Profiled in Barron's Three Hundred Best Buys in College Education, Shepherd offers its 4,000 students more than 70 programs of study. Of special interest are courses in the history of West Virginia and the Appalachian region, and the history of the Lower Shenandoah Valley. The Ruth Scarborough Library has outstanding collections on the Eastern Panhandle and Lower Valley areas. Shepherd College has established the George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War to promote scholarly research on the conflict. The university is located in the center of Shepherdstown.
