Antietam Creek meets the Potomac at canal mile 69. This historic Maryland tributary of the Potomac is an ideal beginner whitewater canoeing creek. A good place to start is Devil's Backbone County Park at a bridge where Maryland Route 68 crosses the creek. A 12-mile stretch runs from the park to the Potomac. Portage around a low dam at Route 34, about a mile south of the Backbone Park. Rapids at Antietam village are located just above the bridge. Check the rapids carefully, or take out above the rapids if you have little experience in whitewater.
