Carderock Recreation Area

C and O Canal Site

Carderock is a recreation area along the canal at milepost 10 that has picnic facilities, rock-climbing, and trails. The area is popular for rock-climbing classes. A marked trail follows the Potomac and provides access to the Billy Goat Trail. Large parking areas and picnic facilities make this an ideal spot for group picnics. Access to the Carderock Recreation Area is from the Clara Barton Parkway in Maryland, approximately 1 mile north of Exit 41 of the Capital Beltway. To reserve the picnic pavilions, a permit must be obtained from the National Park Service by calling 301-299-3613.
