Little Falls Pumping Station

U.S. Army Site

blank dot

This large concrete box located along Canal Road was designed as an emergency water supply source for the Washington Aqueduct in case the Potomac's supply of water reached very low levels. It includes several large pumps that are connected to the Washington Aqueduct. Although the pumping station was built in the 1970s, it was rarely used. The most recent use of the pumping station was in the summer of 2023, when flow levels at Great Falls fell to near-drought levels. The pumping station feeds water to the aqueduct and treatment plant at Dalecarlia, where it supplies water to the District of Columbia and ARlington, Va.
