Major tributary of the Potomac. For many years, the river was polluted by sewer overflows and runoff. The D.C. Water Department is constructing large tunnels under the river to contain the overflow and reduce pollution. Major construction around the Nationals Park and the Navy Yard include a riverfront park that joins the Anacostia River Walk along the river. The Anacostia Watershed Society, based in Bladensburg, Maryland, has been working on cleaning up the river for more than two decades. The current goal is to have the river "fishable and swimmable" by 2025. At Poplar Point, the D.C. government has proposed a large retail, office and sports complex. Environmental groups have supported a park that would occupy the site. For more than two decades, the Navy used the site for mine research, and had more htan 90 buildlings along the Anacostia River.
