These houses along the 100 block and 200 block of Prince Street were homes for many important Alexandria residents during the 18th and 19th centuries, and continue in private ownership. Built during the seaport era, the Federal-period townhouses line the cobblestone block nearest the Potomac. According to local folklore, Hessian prisoners are supposed to have paved this bumpy street--it's better to walk along than drive (speed limit 5 m.p.h.).
