The county seat of Charles County suffered a devastating Tornado in April 2003, killing five people and destroying much of the center of the town.About 70 percent of the downtown was destroyed, as the twister moved easterly from the Potomac River past Smallwood State Park and north of Port Tobacco to bear down on LaPlata.
