The Dahlgren Heritage Foundation opened a museum in King George County, Virginia, in October 2013, that serves as a center for community education, recreation, unique exhibits and stunning naval artifacts. Near the museum are two recreational areas. Wayside Park is on U.S. 301 just south of the bridge. It has a small boat ramp and beach, picnic areas, and excellent views of the lower Potomac. Operated by the King George County Parks and Recreation Department, this 3-acre park is open year round. Barnesfield Park is adjacent to Wayside Park and the museum. This 165-acre park features numerous sports fields, pavilions, play areas, a fitness trail, as well as other recreational trails lined with bird houses and feeders. The park is located on the grounds of what was a working plantation until the Civil War. The house was totally destroyed by a Union gunboat in 1861 and never rebuilt.
