Paw Paw Tunnel Trail

Hiking Trail

blank dot

The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park (C&O Canal) maintains a trail that goes over top the Paw Paw Tunnel. The typical hiking route is a four-mile loop hike over top Sorrel Ridge and back through the Paw Paw Tunnel. Tunnel Hill is a fairly steep trail, so visitors should wear comfortable, sturdy shoes and be prepared for a strenuous hike. If you are planning to visit the tunnel, be aware that it is closed at one end due to a "scaling" project to stabilize the rocks near the tunnel entrance. Since there is no lighting inside the tunnel, it is also recommended to bring a flashlight.

As of early 2023, the tunnel is still open, but the canal towpath below the tunnel is closed. A shuttle service is available but the Park Service reommends using the Tunnel Bypass Trail. Check this website for more details on the project. Read Katherine B.'s review of C&O Canal Towpath on Yelp
