Mattox Creek

Virginia Tributary

blank dot

Mattox Creek is an historic and scenic tributary of the Potomac in Westmoreland County, Virginia. The creek is 13.9 miles long, with the lower 3 miles considered navigable. It is located between the birthplaces of two presidents, George Washington and James Monroe. Washington's great grandfather, John Washington, arrived in the area round 1656, and the family owned land around the creek for more than a century. The creek was a busy port in colonial America and served as a supply route during the Civil War. Several marinas are located along the creek; a bridge carrying Va. Route 205 crosses the upper part of the creek. The original bridge was replaced with a $9 million structure in 2016.
