Monroe Creek and Monroe Bay are popular tributaries of the Potomac near Colonial Beach, Virginia. Monroe Bay is the home of several large marinas with easy access to the Potomac, which is 4 miles wide at this point. The creek is 10 miles southeast of the Harry Nice Bridge and about 38 miles upstream from the mouth of the river at Point Lookout. The river can develop large waves in windy weather. The upper reaches of Monroe Creek are near the birthplace of James Monre, the 5th President of the U.S. The Monroe birthplace has a trail down to the creek and a dock for canoes and kayaks.

The Northern Neck Planning Commission has createa s "Monroe Bay - Monroe Creek Water Trail" that identifies access points on both the Monroe Creek and Bay, as well as sites along the shoreline of the Potomac. To download a copy of the water trail map, select this link.
