Lock 33 Access

Canoe/Kayak Access Point

blank dot

Kayak and canoe access near Lock 33 on the Maryland side of the Potomac at Harpers Ferry. The site is a popular take-out point for tube enthusiasts coming down the Potomac from Shepherdstown, or putting in for a trip down the river past the confluence with the Shenandoah. To reach the access area, take the Valley Road exit from U.S. 340 on the Maryland side, then go left at Keep Tryst Road and right on Sandy Hook Road and follow it as it turns into Harpers Ferry Road. There is parking on the shoulder of Harpers Ferry Road, but the path to the river crosses the canal towpath on a bridge and there is a steep bank down to the river. The site can get busy during summer weekends.

Lock 33 is also located near a pedestrian bridge across the Potomac to Harpers Ferry, and has several historic buildings as well as the lock itself. The Appalachian Trail follows the canal at this point before crossing into West Virginia. The trail to Maryland Heights, with spectacular views of Harpers Ferry, is nearby.
