U.S 340 Bridge Near Harpers Ferry, WV

Potomac River Highway Bridge

Photo of U.S. 340 bridge

At Harpers Ferry, U.S. 340 crosses the Potomac and enters Virginia briefly before continuing on to West Virginia. The stretch of the roadway is popular as a take out point for tubes, kayaks, and canoes. U.S. 340 is the major route from Maryland into Virginia and West Virginia, and carries heavy traffic. A popular hiking trail begins at the parking area on the west side of U.S. 340, continues up the Loudoun Heights Trail to an intersection with the Appalachian Trail, and returns through Harpers Ferry and back on the C&O Canal. Pedestrians are restricted to only one side of the bridge.
