Potomac River Highway Bridge

blank dot

A mile downstream from Williamsport, Md., Interstate 81 crosses the Potomac. The road carries a large number of trucks on a popular north-south route. The road generally follows the old route of U.S. 11 from New York State to Tennessee along the Appalachian Mountains.

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) completed the new Interstate 81 (Veteran?s Memorial Highway) Bridge in 2021. The four-year, $104.6 million project improves safety and mobility, accommodating higher commercial truck volumes and capacity for travel into Washington County and West Virginia. The bridge carries more than 70,000 vehicles daily.
