North Branch Potomac River Railroad Bridge

The bridge across the Potomac is owned by the Verso Corporation, as part of the Luke Mill, one of the earliest industrial developments along the Upper Potomac River. Established by William Luke, the West Virginia Paper Company, later known as Westvaco, became part of MeadWestvaco Corporation, and in 2005 was purchased as part of the NewPage Corporation. The company changed ownership again in 2011, but declinling demand for magazine-quality paper, combined with other factors, led to bankruptcy for Verso in 2016. The Luke plant was finally closed in 2019.
