The Connecticut River State Wildlife Area near Cromwell is a wetland area within the internationally recognized Connecticut River Estuary and Tidal River Wetlands Complex. It spans 548 acres in Cromwell and Middletown. The area is accessible for boating and hiking, with a boat launch on Shunpike Road. The wildlife area is home to a variety of species, including American shad, alewives, and blueback herring, who use the lower portion of the river to spawn. The area also features the Boggy Meadow’, a picturesque grass and reed area with plenty of open water. It’s a high priority Special Focus Area within the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge.
