The Connecticut River Museum, located at 67 Main Street in Essex, is a U.S. history and nature museum dedicated to the preservation and celebration of the cultural and natural heritage of the Connecticut River and its Valley. The museum offers exhibits, boat tours, and interactive programs for all ages. One of the highlights is the "art walk" of the River’s 410-mile course from northern New Hampshire to Long Island Sound in the Vertical Gallery, featuring aerial photography and a whimsical mural. The museum also showcases the famous 1887 Ocean Yacht race between the Coronet and Dauntless, painted by famed maritime artist Antonio Jacobsen. The museum is open year-round, Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and on weekends from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
