Photo of Dierssen Wildlife Sanctuary

Immediately upstream of Pennyfield Lock at mile 20 of the canal is the Dierssen Wildlife Sanctuary named for Marshall Bidwell Dierssen. This 40-acre state land was donated as a waterfowl sanctuary. Two ponds visible from the canal towpath serve as home for wood ducks, teal, and mallards. Nest boxes have been built near the water for wood ducks. White-tailed deer, gray and red fox, and wild turkeys are also present. Mosquitoes and biting insects are common from spring through early fall.
