Virginia Historic Site

This museum on Americanism includes a library on American history and genealogy loaned by the Mayflower Society of Washington. The large white house originally belonged to one of Washington's Mount Vernon assistants, Sam Johnson, who sold spring water and operated a ferry that crossed the Potomac to Maryland. From the 1850s until the 20th century, the home was owned by members of a Quaker family, who enlarged the house. In 1977, the building was acquired by the current owners who established a library on U.S. history and Indian lore. Part of the library is devoted to the Society of Mayflower Descendants of the District of Columbia.
