Stafford County

Virginia County

blank dot

Northernmost county of Virginia's Northern Neck, Stafford County is home of the Marine Corps base at Quantico. County seat is Stafford. Towns include Brooke, Grafton Village, and suburbs of Fredericksburg. The county is bounded on the east by the Potomac River and on the south by the Rappahannock. On the Rappahannock south of Fredericksburg is Ferry Farm, boyhood home of George Washington. The county is bisected by major north/south routes: U.S. 1 and Interstate 95. Both carry heavy traffic between Richmond and Washington, D.C.

Stafford's population has grown significantly in the past decade, with two thirds of the workers commuting to jobs in Washington or other areas outside the county. The county is still about 70 percent rural, with no incorporated towns and no county center. The county has enacted strong land use controls to help in managing growth.
