blank dot

The dominant feature of Mineral County is Knobly Mountain, which parallels the North Branch valley and is one of a series of foothills to the Alleghenies. The county seat is Keyser, located at a turn in the North Branch where the river heads north toward Cumberland. Towns in Mineral County include New Creek, Headsville, Ridgely (just across the river from Cumberland) and Fort Ashby. The fort was one of a series of frontier forts recommended by George Washington to protect Virginia. Mineral County is bounded on the west and north by the Potomac River, on the east by Hampshire County, and on the south by Grant County.
