C and O Canal Terminus

National Park Site

Photo of Cumberland RR Station

Obliterated by a flood control project built after the 1936 flood, the original C&O Canal terminus is only a memory. However, the C&O Canal National Historical Park has done its best to re-create the original canal at Cumberland. Milestone 184 marks the last mile of the canal from Georgetown to Cumberland. The site includes the restored Western Maryland Railway station, which includes a National Park Service visitors' center as well as a restaurant known as "The Crabby Pig." Nearby is a replica canal boat, interpretive signs, and retail shops at Canal Place. The Great Allegany Passage, a popular 150-mile rail trail from Pittsburgh, connects with the canal topath. The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad has tours to Frostburg that leave from the Cumberland station.
