Corbalis Treatment Plant

Water Treatment Plant

Photo of Corbalis Water Plant

The large structure opposite the confluence of the Potomac and Seneca Creek is the intake for the Fairfax Water (also known as Fairfax County Water Authority) completed in 1982. The Authority has for many years depended on the Occoquan Reservoir for its water supply, but growth forced it to seek additional water sources in the 1980s. The Corbalis Treatment Plant, approximately six miles away, treats the water, which is then pumped into the Authority's system. Water is provided for portions of Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William counties, as well as the city of Alexandria. The intake is expected to supply the area's growing needs in the next several decades, expanding from an intital 50 million gallons per day to 150 million gallons per day capacity.

The Visitor Education Center at the Corbalis Water Treatment Plant provides education materials for the study of state-of-the-art water treatment. The center also provides a controlled access for visitors to the treatment plant.
