Potomac River Generating Station

Virginia Power Plant

Photo of Alexandria Power Plant

The Potomac River Generating Station was a 514-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power station owned and operated by Mirant (now GenOn Energy) on the Potomac shoreline in Alexandria.. The plant was decommissioned in 2012 and was bought by Hilco Redevelopment Partners. Pepco will continue to own part of the site to operate an electrical substation. The site is currently undergoing remediation. In 2022, the City of Alexandria approved a plan to begin the redevopment of the site as part of the Old Town North Arts and Cultural District.
