One of the most popular parts of the Virginia State Park system, Leesylvania is located on the site of one of the Lee family plantations. Among the Lee children born here was Light Horse Harry Lee, a Revolutionary War colonel, governor of Virgnia, and father of Robert E. Lee. The 500-acre park is bordered by water on three sides--the Potomac, Neabsco Creek, and Powell's Creek. It has hiking trails overlooking the river and Occoquan Bay. The picnic area also has a long, sandy beach for fishing (but not swimming). Boating facilities include rowboat rentals and boat launching ramps. Restrooms and a concession stand are also available. The park charges a parking fee.
At the mouth of Neabsco Creek in 1837, explorers found a monumental inscription dating to the early 1600s. The monument read "Here lies ye body of Liut. William Herris, who died May ye 16th, 1608, aged 65 years, by birth a Britain, a good soldier, a good husband and neighbor."
